What else does Mondi do about looking after the environment?
Mondi’s commitment to sustainable performance runs
through our business. The aim is to ensure an environmentally
sound product lifecycle, so focus areas are selected all along the
chain. Production processes and wood sources are continually
reassessed to further improve the company’s environmental
performance by reducing waste to landfill, minimizing emissions,
increasing the use of renewable energy and ensuring that fibre is
derived from renewable sources. By addressing such key issues
as climate change, resource depletion, ecosystems, degradation
and poverty, Mondi is involved in sustainable business solutions
and it’s associated principles.
One of Mondi’s major investments in the environment is their
proud sponsorship of the Mondi Wetlands Programme, endorsed
by WESSA (Wildlife and Environmental Society of SA) as well as
the WWF. The aim of the programme is to initiate social change
that encourages wetland users and owners to manage their
wetland resources in a more environmentally relevant manner.
In 2008, Mondi signed a further 5 year contract with WWF to
support this project to the value of R20 million; another example
of Mondi’s commitment to sustainable operations.
Mondi’s commitment is not only to the environment and their
forests, but also to those that live within them. In 2008 Mondi
signed the first corporate forestry land restitution settlement in
South Africa that effectively agreed to the transfer of over 4,000
hectares of Mondi land to two forest communities. Further to this,
Mondi continue to work closely with WWF and industry partners
to refine the science and practice behind New Generation
Plantations. They also remain committed to ensuring that at least
25% of their land in South Africa is not converted to plantations.

What makes the FSC forests special?
Forests must be managed to the highest environmental, social and economic standards. Trees that are harvested are replanted or allowed to regenerate naturally; but it does not stop there. The forests must be managed with due respect for the environment, the wildlife and the people who live and work in them. This is what makes the FSC system unique and ensures that a forest is well-managed, from the protection of indigenous people’s rights to the methods of felling trees.
